Minonk-Leona May Sakes, 98, of Minonk, Il passed away at 10:00p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at Heritage Health in Minonk where she had been a resident since 2006.
She was born on October 2, 1918 in Minonk a daughter of Theodore and Ella May Stokowski. She married Kenneth A. Sakes on July 30, 1939 in Minonk. He passed away on January 10, 2002.
Surviving are two sons, Gary(Dianne) Sakes of Englewood, FL; Richard Sakes of LaSalle; six grandchildren, Andrea Dolan, Shannon Sakes, Mark Newlun, Erica Bolton, Amy Iorio and Russell Sakes; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Irma Jean Reints and Joan Barth both of Minonk.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, two brothers, Melvin and Richard Stokowski and great granddaughter, Olivia Dolan.
Leona was a homemaker, and she and Kenneth loved spending time with their family, traveling, going to dances and playing cards with their many friends.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ and Woodford County Home Extension..
Funeral services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Minonk. David Strickler will officiate. Visitation will be held from 9-11a.m. before the services on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Minonk Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial contributions be made to American Legion Post #464 in Benson, Il. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.ruestmanharrisfuneralhome.com.
