James Birky

James V. Birky, 91, of Hudson, passed away at 5:05 p.m., Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Heritage Health Care in El Paso after a short battle with esophageal cancer.

He was born on January 22, 1927 in Bloomington, IL, to Albert V. and Fern (Carlock) Birky. He married Elzada J. Zehr on November 9, 1952 in Carlock, IL. She died August 2, 2012.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald Birky; siblings Richard Birky, William Birky and Ann Francis.
Surviving are one daughter, Lori (Tom) Guth; four grandchildren, Bret Birky, Mitch (Alicia) Birky, Elizabeth (Gabe) Madlem and Daniel Guth; great-grandchildren, Declan and Lillian Madlem, Ainsley Birky; daughter - in-law, Lyndsey (Lee Worcester) Birky; and his sister Margaret Frahm.

Jim served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1950 to 1952. He farmed and lived in Hudson area his entire life and attended East White Oak Bible Church. He served as a board member for Hudson Grain Elevator and was a Hudson Township Trustee. Jim was also formerly part owner of Kerrick Elevator.

He was very proud of his grandchildren and they, along with his great-grandchildren, were the light of his life.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2018 at East White Oak Bible Church in Carlock, IL. Rev. Scott Boerckel will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to services at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in El Paso is assisting the family with arrangements. Burial will be in Kaufman Cemetery in rural Hudson.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Illinois Cancer Care Foundation or Illinois State University Foundation (for specific use in the Mennonite Nursing Simulation Lab).
