Catherine Klopfenstein
CHENOA -- M. Catherine Klopfenstein, 87, formerly of Gridley, passed away peacefully in her sleep at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Meadows Mennonite Home, rural Chenoa, where she had resided since Aug. 27, 2014. Prior to that, she had resided at Meadows at Mercy Creek, Normal, for 2 years.
She was born Feb. 7th, 1927, the daughter of Ray and Minnie Catherine Yordy Slagell. She married Ralph D. Klopfenstein of Gridley on June 2, 1945. He preceded her in death on March 6, 2008.
She is survived by 7 children: Four sons, Cleve (Kathleen) of Peoria, Martin of Bloomington, Stanley of El Paso, and David (Linda) of Petersburg. Three daughters, Gloria Volk of Normal, Judy (Dave) Knobloch of Bloomington, and Cathy (Tim) Hohulin of Roanoke.
Sixteen grandchildren: Jamie (Joe) Scroggins, Jodie (Dave) Allenson, Crystal Klopfenstein, Aaron (Kara) Klopfenstein, Nathan Klopfenstein, Dylan (Lindsey) Klopfenstein, Eric (Retta) Knobloch, Shelley (Sam) Steffen, Casey (Jamie) Knobloch, Jake (Malissa) Knobloch, Sonya (Jeremy) Embry, Vincent (Lin) Klopfenstein, Dan (Tami) Klopfenstein, Jennifer (Brett) Heiniger, Staci (Jerime) Barrett, Amy Hohulin and 29 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is one brother, Gerald (Rosetta) Slagell of Flanagan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters (Thelma Rowe and Bernice Yergler) and two brothers (Wallace Slagell and Burdell Slagell).
She was a member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Gridley. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5 at the church following visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall. Church ministers will officiate. Burial will be in Gridley Cemetery.
Catherine's Christian life was exemplified by her contentment and positive attitude. She was a devoted and cheerful wife, mother, and grandmother and was a friend to everyone she met. She and her husband Ralph also lived many years in La Grange, IL. and also in Washington, D.C. for 5 years where she volunteered at the White House under the Reagan and Bush administrations.
Memorials may be made to the Apostolic Christian Church of Gridley, Meadows at Mercy Creek of Normal, or a charity of the donor's choice.
