Gridley-Brent J. Kirkton, 66, of Gridley, Illinois passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.
Brent was born on October 6, 1949 a son of Rodney Kirkton and Dorothy Kent Kirkton of Gridley. He married Linda Yount on October 23, 1971 in El Paso, Illinois. Linda passed away on June 9, 2002. He married Marilyn Mackey on July 2, 2005 at the home of Kevin and Kathy Yergler in rural Gridley. She survives along with daughter, Mindy Kirkton of Tolono, IL and son, Jeff (Cheryl) Kirkton of Winfield, Illinois and the light of his life, granddaughter, Stella Marie Kirkton.
Other survivors include his beloved brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Juana Kirkton of Ventura, California, nephew, Thad Kirkton; Aunts Maralon (John) Stauter and Pauline Booher of Gridley, Illinois; step-children and grandchildren: Lynette, Herb, Hannah and Maggie Stevens of Normal, Illinois; DuWayne, Heather, Kyle, Tori, Carleigh, Maddyx and Mia Owens of Taylorville, IL; cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Mike Yount and sister-in-law, Monette Alvarez.
Brent was employed at NuAir/SC2 services for many years. He was instrumental in starting the Gridley Emergency Medical Services, served with Habitat for Humanity, was a volunteer fireman, and was Mayor of Gridley for 21 years.
Brent never met a stranger and was dedicated to helping others. He spent many years with his best friends, Charlie Looney and Mickey Finck as scout leaders of Venture Crew 21. He loved fishing and talking about fishing and spent time every summer with his children, nephew, and brother on Northern fishing trips.
Brent touched many lives and helped bring others to Christ though his years of work with Cursillo. The Book of Ecclesiates says "there is a time to weep; a time to laugh; a time to mourn and time to dance." Brent would want us to laugh while we mourn. He will be missed but never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2016 at Christ Community Church in Gridley. Pastor Grant Stauter will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at the Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in El Paso. Cremation will be accorded following services on Friday.
