Kurt Haas 52, of Bloomington, formerly of ElPaso passed away on November 26, 2018 at the University of Chicago Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 27, 1966 in Bloomington, IL to Thomas F. and Carol (Mohr) Haas.
He married Lisa Ann Stith on December 11, 1993 in Minonk, IL. She survives. Fate brought them together with an unexpected meeting and it was love at first sight!
He is survived by 1 daughter Alexis Nicole Haas of Bloomington, IL; his mother and step-father Carol (Ken) Sampson of Normal, IL; 5 brothers Frank (Bonnie) Haas of Elpaso, IL; Russ (Myrna) Haas of Normal, IL; Ray (Donna) Haas of Bloomington, IL; Clyde (Sharon) Haas of Clinton, IL; Tim Haas of Bloomington, IL; 3 sisters Lillian Howell of Bloomington, IL; Jean Haas of Normal, IL; Michelle Sampson of Leroy, IL; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Haas; his step-mother Dorothy Haas; and his maternal grandparents Clyde and Irene Mohr; and his paternal grandparents Frank and Lillian Haas.
Kurt graduated from Mazon-Verona-Kinsman high school in 1984. Kurt then proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for 8 ½ years until March of 1993. After his military service he worked for Central Soya in Gibson City for a few years before starting his career at the City of Bloomington for 17 years. He started as a building inspector and ended up as the Superintendent of Streets and Sewers. While working at the City of Bloomington, he earned his Bachelor of Science at Illinois State University in Construction Management with Summa Cum Laude honors. He left the City to accept a job as the Director of Maintenance at Bloomington & Normal Water Reclamation District.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Minonk where he helped the church in various minor capacities throughout the years. Kurt had a strong faith in the Lord that helped him these last few years as he dealt with his pain and it inspired others to see him remain so positive. He was an avid Chicago White Sox's fan inspiring others to also like the team. Kurt was a big kid at heart, he loved playing with his nephews, nieces and children of friends, and loved doing things that would benefit kids of all ages. He was a proud Girl Scout Dad joining the Girl Scouts to help his wife with their daughter's troop and teaching the girls that any day that ended in a "Y" was a good day for Dairy Queen! He also was willing to help family and friends in any way that he could. He enjoyed electrical projects, cars and fixing up his 1964 ½ Mustang.
Kurt will be remembered as a loving husband of almost 25 years to Lisa and a father who loved Alexis so much and wanted to do so many more important things with her! He was positive, smiling, inspiring, happy, loving, a true gentleman, helpful, a great and memorable boss who impacted many and cared for the safety of his employees, a good listener and advice giver, and a great and treasured friend and mentor to many.
A visitation will be held on November 30, 2018 at Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Minonk from 4-7 pm. Funeral Service will be on December 01, 2018 at the Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Minonk at 11 am with a visitation 1 hour before. Reverend Harry Sanders will officiate. Burial with military rites will follow at Minonk Township Cemetery.
