Roanoke - Shirley M. Mitchell, 90, of Roanoke, passed away at 9:45 pm on Sunday July 8, 2012 at her home in Roanoke.

She was born in that same home in Roanoke on May 7, 1922 to William and Delphareta Dearmin Cox. She married Austin Mitchell on April 16, 1955 in Roanoke, IL. He died on April 29, 1987.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Mitchell of Peoria; Linda (Rocke) Cooper of Washington; two grandchildren, Katie Cooper and Evan Cooper; and one sister Frances Hountz of Roanoke.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Edward Cox; and two sisters, Minnie Volk and Litta Watts.

Shirley was homemaker and also had worked as a janitor at Sowers Elementary School in Roanoke; as a printer for International Paper; and as a secretary for Apache Trucking.

Shirley had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening. She also loved to play bingo with family and friends. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

She was a member of the Roanoke United Methodist Church where funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday July 11, 2012. The Rev. Ken Sloan Couch will officiate. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9-11 am before the services at the church. Burial will be in Roanoke Township Cemetery. Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home in Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

The family would like to thank Dr. Brad Stoeker and staff, Dr. Parker McRae and staff and OSF Hospice for the loving care that was given to Shirley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Roanoke United Methodist Church or the Apostolic Christian Home of Roanoke. Online condolences may be sent to the family at knappjohnsonharris.com.
