Lacon
Robert J. Newman, 87, of Lacon, formerly of Washburn, passed
away at 9:10 a.m.at Proctor Hospital on Monday January 9,
2012. He was born on January 24, 1924 to the late Harry and
Alice (Wills) Newman in Henry, IL. He married Marilyn
Phillips on August 28, 1950 in Streator, IL; she survives.
Also surviving are one son, Robert (Diane) Newman, of Waxhaw,
NC; three daughters, Jill (Robert) Conrad, of Sparland, IL; Sandra
(William Gaines, of Murfreesboro, TN; and Shirlee (Shane) Burris,
of Clearwater, KS; 8 grandchildren; Kristen and Robert
Newman, Erikka Goff, Alexandra Conrad, Michele Smotherman, Sam and
Michael Weiss, and Hope Dale; 11 great-grandchildren; twin sister
Roberta Manning, of Washington, IL; sister Dorothy (Sam) Hagar of
Taylor Mill, KY; sister-in-law Betty Newman, of Chillicothe; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Herb Newman; and two
sisters, Ruth Glaub and Maxine Buselmeir.
Bob attended Redtown Grade School in Henry and he graduated from
Dunlap High School. He was a machinist at Caterpillar in East
Peoria for 38 years, retiring in 1980. Bob and Marilyn lived
in Florida for a number of years and moved to Lacon in 1998.
He enjoyed gardening and woodworking; and spending time with his
grandchildren. Bob will be missed as a loving husband,
father, grandfather, and friend.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday January 13, 2012 at
Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon. The Reverend Ted Mitchell will
officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the
services. Burial will follow at Hopetown Cemetery in Lostant,
IL. Memorials may be made to LS-52 or the First United
Methodist Church in Chillicothe. Online condolences may be
