James McKee
PEORIA HEIGHTS -- James "Jim" R. McKee, 90, a resident at OSF
St. Clare Home, and formerly of Muncie, Ind., passed away at 3:58
p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at OSF Saint Francis Medical
Center.
Born Feb. 10, 1921, in Charleston, Ill., to Guy Robin and
Elizabeth McKee, he married L. Maxine Scott on Jan. 18, 1943, in
Grant County, Ind. She preceded him in death on May 21, 1994.
Surviving are his daughters Janet (Andy) Warrner of Muncie, IN
and Rita McKee of New York, N.Y., and sons James (Dotty) McKee,
Jr., of Waterloo, Iowa, Randall (Janet) McKee of Mooresville, Ind.,
and Jon (Sally) McKee of Germantown Hills. Also surviving are
grandchildren Andrew, Robert, Thomas John (TJ) and Stephen Warrner,
Jameson McKee, Libby Adams, Kelli and Sean McKee, and seven
great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Mary Atkinson of
Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by three brothers: Charles, Paul and
Wendell.
He graduated from Ball State Teachers College in Muncie. He
served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, attaining
the rank of captain. He continued serving until 1951 as a captain
in the National Guard, while teaching at Blaine Middle School in
Muncie. He later worked for Ball Corporation in Muncie for over 26
years as a research chemist and finally as vice president of Ball's
Pantek Building Systems, where he pioneered pre-formed,
foam-injected housing panel technology. He was awarded a number of
patents at Ball, including developing the molded rubber seal
attached to the metal lids of Ball canning jars. He retired from
Ball in 1983 and moved to Green Valley, Arizona in 1985. He
returned to the Midwest later in life.
He was active in the Universalist Unitarian Church in Muncie
where he oversaw the current church building project as its
president. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed practical
jokes, winemaking, painting and family pets. He will be greatly
missed by his loving family and friends.
Cremation has been accorded. A private family service will be
held at the Universalist Unitarian Church Gardens in Muncie at a
later date. Arrangements are being handled by Knapp-Johnson-Harris
in Roanoke.
